Alignment is a Beautiful Thing
“Drop the consumption. Step into embodiment. The world doesn't need another person hoarding knowledge.
It needs artists.
It needs lovers.
It needs mystics.
It needs those who are bold enough to embody their wisdom.”
I am blessed to share that starting next week, I will be kicking off my journey as a Part-time Lecturer on behalf of the Committee on Education at the University of Chicago! This Spring quarter, yours truly will be teaching the History of American Urban Education for undergraduate and graduate students. I’ve been blessed to work at UChicago for the last 4.5 years within the Master of Science in Applied Data Science program, a space that I deeply value and love the impact we make on a daily basis. With their unwavering support, I am stepping into the next phase of my life’s ascension and evolution. Teaching is my calling and I cannot wait to offer my LIGHT to those who are meant to come into my path through this medium.
Last summer 2024, I spent the July 4th weekend in New York (a whole vibe). While in Brooklyn, I was guided to this restaurant and the first person I saw was Juwan Howard. I have always been a fan of his for many reasons but one of the main ones is because we both grew up in Chicago Housing Authority’s (CHA) Lowden Homes on the Southside. We spoke about our upbringings, the community, and the blessing of where we both are now. It was an incredible full circle moment for me. Juwan was able to hone his athletic abilities coupled with his wit to create a future for himself by way of the NBA. Unfortunately, my hoop dreams were more like hoop nightmares so I knew that would not be my reality; however, education was my guided pathway.
As a child, the University of Chicago felt like an unattainable place to be. In fact, I never considered it as a place to attend undergrad due to the false narratives I told myself about not being worthy because of where I grew up. As I continued to lean heavily into my healing and growth pilgrimage, I have shed all of my limiting beliefs and embracing where God always meant for me to LIVE MY CREED (S/O to Langston Hughes).
Lowden Homes is my foundation; it is a part of me as I am a part of it. Though it was not always easy, I learned so much growing up there - lessons I live to this day. I proudly serve as a “Dope Kid from the Chi” and know that my life is a testament to many of the infinite possibilities of what could be. Never allow anyone to confine you to narrow spaces because of who you are or where you came from.
UChicago meet Professor Dr. Du; I promise, you are in for quite the EXPERIENCE! As always, I appreciate the love and support from my tribe. Please keep me uplifted in your prayers as I pivot to fulfill my quest to “DIE EMPTY,” the art of gifting the world with all you have inside before this life is over.
Until our next adventure, BE WELL & BE FREE!
